This is the official start of my journey into the world of the Etching Alternative – an experiment I started a year ago. I have always loved mixed media and creating my own designs in etched copper has been a fun challenge over the years. Originally I intended to create paper prints from these etchings, but with the digital age, no one has a hand crank printing press in the area. So rather than cut up some of these etchings (after hours of work in creating them) I started experimenting with how I could make alternate prints. My love of clay had me try traditional Premo/Sculpey, but the etchings are really too shallow for that application.
Next in my toolbox was liquid clay and the box of alcohol inks that I wasn’t quite sure what to do with. Then the fun began! Acrylic paint, alcohol ink, micah powder, clear or colored liquid clay – the combinations are endless. Put those veneers with traditional cane work or Mokume Gane slices and the imagination can go wild. Add the third element of metal and/or wire – need I say more.
