2017 Weekly Polymer Clay Challenge

Week #23 of the 2017 Weekly Polymer Clay Challenge includes my version of Morado Opal (Mexican Purple Opal) to complement the center stone that is real opal. Along with a starry Etching Alternative veneer and a Mokume Gane veneer.
Week #22 of the Weekly Polymer Clay Challenge includes 3 shawl pins/hair pins made with 3 different Etching Alternative veneers. The pins have wire in them for extra strength and flexibility.
Week #21 of the 2017 Weekly Polymer Clay Challenge includes jewelry pieces made with a combination of Etching Alternative veneer and Mokume Gane veneer. Experimenting with various shapes.
Week #20 of the 2017 Weekly Polymer Clay Challenge includes an Etching Alternative veneer in a brass setting, but also a veneer learned in Claire Maunsel’s class at the New England Polymer Artist Guild. Putting the 2 techniques together was a challenge and I’m happy with the results.
Week #19 of the 2017 Weekly Polymer Clay Challenge includes a new shawl pin using the Etching Alternative veneer, regular clay as backing and twisted copper wire.
Week #18 of the 2017 Weekly Polymer Clay Challenge includes a new shawl pin using the Etching Alternative veneer, regular clay as backing and twisted copper wire.
Week #17 of the 2017 Weekly Polymer Clay Challenge is the 3rd option for the special customer request. This one include an Etching Alternative Veneer with a gold glass rose insert. Antique black glass beads frame the pendant and the clasp and three strands of purple glass beads are wired together with polymer coated copper wire.
Week #16 of the 2017 Weekly Polymer Clay Challenge includes option #2 for the customer’s cameo & lace request. This one is a bit more elaborate with the Etching Alternative veneer and an antique glass rose insert. Antique black glass beads are wired to the pendant using polymer coated copper wire.
Week #15 of the 2017 Weekly Polymer Clay Challenge started off as a special customer request for cameos and lace. The pendant is an Etching Alternative veneer with an insert of an antique glass rose. The antique black glass beads are strung on polymer coated wire and the 3 drops are veneer.
Week #14 of the 2017 Weekly Polymer Clay Challenge includes this black and white necklace. The white striped beads are hollow as is the long cylinder bead. The pendant is framed with black aluminum strip and black wire
Week #13 of the 2017 Polymer Clay Challenge includes a necklace which was created as a donation for a Habitat for Humanity benefit. It started with an etched copper tube and the middle piece of the pendant. The other 2 layers of the pendant are Etching Alternative veneers, the top one being encased in copper with copper wire. The necklace is hand woven blue copper wire with a hand made clasp.
Week #12 includes 2 large green dragonflies for the Into the Forest project. The wings are from an Etching Alternative veneer with wire embedded in the veneer.
Week #11 includes 2 large blue dragonflies for the Into the Forest project. The wings are from an Etching Alternative veneer with decorative wire on the back.
Week #10 broken heart pendant was created while teaching the Etching Alternative class at the New England Polymer Art Guild.
Week #9 includes a broken heart pendant using an Etching Alternative veneer and a lupine cane created by Sandy Clement. The pendant is finished with brass strip and woven with brass wire.
Week #8 of the Polymer Clay Challenge includes a new abstract pendant using 2 different Etching Alternative veneers from the same copper sheet so the design extends from the dark green into the light green. The pendant is divided by a strip of brass and hammered brass wire circles are woven through the brass strip being the base for the pendant.
Week #7 includes a star shaped pendant with an Etching Alternative veneer, brass strips & brass wire
Week #6 includes a pendant with an Etching Alternative veneer, brass strips & brass wire
Week #5 includes a pin with an Etching Alternative veneer, brass strips & brass wire
Week #4 includes a stylized flower pendant using an Etching Alternative veneer, brass strips and brass wire.
Week #3 includes the earrings that go with the asymmetrical chunky necklace from last week. The earrings include some veneer from the Etching Alternative and a small piece of Mokume Gane surrounded by textured black clay. Hung from a black chain and sterling earring wires.
Week #2 includes a necklace made with part Etching Alternative veneer and part Mokume Gane pieces surrounded by textured black clay. A toggle clasp finishes the piece. Making this necklace was very difficult for me as I usually prefer symmetry.
This year’s challenge is going to be all about the new technique – the Etching Alternative. So to start off in Week #1 is a brass bound “Broken Heart Pendant”. The left side is a piece of veneer made from an etched plate and the right side is Mokume Gane. As the back is just as important, I have textured it and added a little color. It currently hangs from a re-sizeable rubber necklace.
